Canvas Repairs for Boats and Outdoor Gear

Here at Cairnscorp we do various repairs to canvas tents and boat covers. We are also able to repair many other products including marquees tarps and screens.

Understanding Canvas damage

When a customer contacts us with wanting to repair product we usually ask if they are local to pop in so we can actually handle the product to see if we are able to repair it and if the material is beyond repair. If that is not possible, we will ask for a photo so a fabricator can assess the product. This allows us to decide the best action to start a repair and advise the customer the cost to carry out the repair. Most tent repairs are rips from weather events being put away damp which can cause mould or holes caused by storage when rodents decided to munch on the fabric.

Essential tools and materials for canvas repairs

To make a long-lasting repair we use canvas to patch tears and holes in a colour to match the existing article. We sew the patch on both sides to enclose the damage. We have industrial sewing machines to sew these repairs for heavy canvas. We use specialist thread that can swell when wet therefore seals up the needle holes to not allowing water to penetrate. Our thread is UV stable to add to the repair’s longevity.

Step by step guide to repairing canvas holes and tears

Starting a repair check that the item is clean from dirt and mould. Ensure that the canvas is dry and is not to worn so it can take a patch We sew the patch on both sides to enclose the damage so a rip will not spread and being waterproof canvas does not need any extra treatment, sew with the appropriate thread that is strong and will swell in wet conditions. We use this thread also for sewing seams which will also have the same effect but you can also paint on seam sealers for extra protection

Tips for preventing canvas damage

A good way of maintaining canvas tents to increase their lifespan and longevity is always to pack them away clean for storage and dry do not store in a cold damp area and ensure it has good ventilation. Ensure there is no access for rodents to gain entry to the tents or covers It is advisable to check on your tents from time to time before you go to use them just in case you need any repairs. After time tent canvas can lose its waterproofing properties so we do sell suitable waterproofing products for canvas and acrylic canvas to bring back to being water tight

Here at Cairnscorp when manufacturing boat covers, we always re enforce our boat covers to mitigate this problem When putting your cover onto your boat ensure that it is not pulled too tight as if you have protruding sharp edges can rub into the canvas which could result in wearing or holes.
